60 minutes · 3 sections · 40 questions. You have one hour to read three sets of texts and answer 40 questions. There is no extra transfer time, in the General Training Reading paper, your answers must be finished within the hour.
This paper leads on short-answer questions (Questions 1–7 and 32–35) and on summary completion from a word bank (Questions 28–31), where you choose a letter from a supplied list of words instead of copying words out of the passage. Around them sit sentence completion, True/False/Not Given, multiple choice, matching features and Yes/No/Not Given.
Work quickly: Section 3 carries the same marks as Section 1 but takes far longer to read, so most candidates aim to leave Section 1 within about 15 minutes. Spelling counts. Where a question says NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS, an answer of three words scores zero even if the meaning is right.
